Do I Need APs to Apply to Oxford? A Guide for U.S. Students
If you’re a U.S. student hoping to apply to the University of Oxford, your AP exam results are extremely important.
Oxford publishes clear minimum AP requirements, but there is an important difference between meeting the minimum and having a genuinely competitive Oxford academic profile.
How Many APs Does Oxford Require?
Oxford states its entry requirements in terms of A-levels. A-levels are the standard qualifications taken by students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland during the final two years of high school. UK universities use A-level grades to state their entry requirements, and Oxford provides equivalent requirements for US qualifications such as APs.
The exact AP requirement therefore depends on the A-level requirement for the Oxford degree you are applying to.
For courses requiring A-level grades of A*A*A, the equivalent AP requirement is:
- Four APs at grade 5, including any required subjects; OR
- Three APs at grade 5, including any required subjects, plus an ACT of 33+ or SAT of 1480+.
For courses requiring A-level grades of A*AA, the equivalent AP requirement is:
- Four APs at grade 5, including any required subjects; OR
- Three APs at grade 5, including any required subjects, plus an ACT of 32+ or SAT of 1470+.
For courses requiring A-level grades of AAA, the equivalent AP requirement is:
- Four APs at grade 5, including any required subjects; OR
- Three APs at grade 5, including any required subjects, plus an ACT of 31+ or SAT of 1460+.
Is Three or Four APs Really Enough for Oxford?
Technically, yes. But I would not recommend aiming for Oxford’s minimum.
Oxford attracts exceptionally strong applicants from around the world. A strong US applicant will often have around five to seven APs, with 5s across the board.
This does not mean you should take as many APs as possible.
In fact, if Oxford is your goal, I would much rather see you take five or six carefully chosen APs and achieve all 5s than overload yourself with eight or ten APs and end up with a mixture of 5s, 4s and 3s.
For Oxford, quality is more important than quantity.
Do I Really Need 5s?
Yes. Oxford’s published US qualification requirements specify grade 5 for the APs being used to meet its entrance requirements.
A 4 is a very good AP result for many universities, but Oxford is extraordinarily competitive. If you are aiming for Oxford, you should be working towards 5s in your AP exams, including those most relevant to your chosen degree.
A weaker AP result in 11th or 12th grade can make an otherwise excellent academic profile less competitive, so don’t take an AP simply because you think having another AP on your transcript will impress Oxford.
Which AP Subjects Should I Take?
This depends on the Oxford degree you want to study.
Some courses have specific subject requirements, particularly mathematics and science degrees. You need to check the requirements for your individual Oxford course and make sure your AP choices satisfy them.
For courses that require mathematics, Oxford requires AP Calculus BC. AP Calculus AB and AP Precalculus do not satisfy Oxford’s mathematics subject requirement.
So don’t simply choose the APs you think will be easiest to get a 5 in. Your AP profile should make academic sense for the degree you want to study.
Can AP Calculus AB and BC Count as Two APs?
No.
AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC cannot count as two separate AP qualifications towards Oxford’s entry requirements.
There are also specific rules around combinations of AP Physics exams, so prospective science and engineering students should check Oxford’s current requirements carefully.
Should I Take More APs to Improve My Chances?
Not necessarily.
If Oxford is a serious goal, my advice is simple:
Choose around five to seven academically appropriate APs and concentrate on getting 5s.
Don’t chase an enormous number of APs simply to make your transcript look impressive. Oxford isn’t looking for AP collecting. It is looking for evidence that you have the academic ability and subject preparation to succeed in a demanding Oxford degree.
And remember, AP results are only one part of the Oxford application. Depending on your course, your application may also involve an admissions test, written work and an academic interview.
The Bottom Line
Oxford’s official requirement may be only three or four APs at grade 5, depending on whether you are also using an SAT or ACT score.
But if Oxford is your goal, don’t build your academic plan around doing the minimum.
Take a sensible number of relevant APs, aim for 5s, and prioritize academic strength over simply taking as many AP classes as possible.
