Admissions essays required by UK, Irish and many EU universities are quite different from the US Common App essay and not interchangeable with it. These essays require a focused, course-aligned narrative that demonstrates intellectual curiosity and academic readiness for a specific degree program. This shift can feel unfamiliar for many US students, so I will guide you through it from first ideas to final polish, ensuring your statement is compelling, structured, and competitive for top universities, including Oxford or Cambridge

If you'd like to talk things through get in touch today.
Absolutely! UK and European degrees meet strict academic and quality standards and are fully recognized as equivalent to degrees earned in the United States.
In addition, UK bachelor’s degrees are awarded with honors, reflecting a high level of academic specialization and achievement, which can add further credibility with US employers and graduate schools.
Students who study abroad also gain a real advantage. The independence, resilience, and global perspective they develop are highly valued by US employers and graduate programs alike, helping them stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape.
For licensed professions such as medicine, law, and architecture, additional steps may be required to practice in the United States.
It’s rarely too early—or too late—to start thinking about UK or European university applications.
For most students, junior year is the sweet spot to begin more detailed planning, with the summer before senior year being the key time to actively prepare applications for fall submission. For those considering Oxford, Cambridge, or degree programs with specific high school class pre-requisites, starting in sophomore year can be advantageous.
On the earlier side, I regularly work with middle-school families during their high school selection process, as different academic systems can significantly impact future UK and European university options. Choosing the right high school curriculum from the outset can open more doors later.
At the other end, I also support students who decide to apply very late in the day. The good news is there are many fantastic options available at excellent universities even in August–just a few weeks before the degree programs start in mid-September.
Whether you’re planning well in advance or just beginning to explore, a conversation can help bring clarity and direction. You’re very welcome to schedule a chat, and we can map out a plan that feels manageable and right for you.
A UK or European application essay is a very different piece of writing.
Rather than a personal narrative, it is an academic statement focused on your chosen future major(s). Universities want to see clear evidence of your academic background and interest in this subject and proof that you are ready to study this in depth for the duration of your degree studies.
This is where many US students go wrong. A Common App essay, no matter how strong, is not designed for this format.
I work closely with you to build a thoughtful, degree-focused statement from the ground up, one that reflects your academic interests, highlights relevant super-curricular exploration, and speaks directly to what UK and European universities are looking for.
(And, the good news is there is usually only one essay required! The same personal statement is sent to all your UK university choices and this can often be adapted for Irish and other European applications as well. There are no supplemental questions, just one essay and done!)
UK and European admissions focus almost entirely on academic fit. They want to know that you’re prepared for and genuinely interested in the subject you’re applying for. A perfect GPA isn’t usually essential; because degrees are highly subject-focused, universities are mainly looking for strong grades in the high school courses most relevant to your chosen degree.
Leadership roles, general extracurriculars and “well-roundedness” are generally not deciding factors unless they directly support your academic interest.
I help you highlight the right elements so your application speaks clearly to what admissions teams value most.
Entry requirements are clearly listed on each university’s website and vary by both degree major and institution.
APs or the IB Diploma offer the most flexibility, but many UK and European universities will also consider advanced high school classes, college credit, SAT or ACT scores, and overall GPA.
What matters most is strong performance in high school classes related to your intended degree program, rather than a perfect transcript.
Each student’s application strategy is tailored to their academic profile, subject interests, and best-fit goals. As a result, my students have received offers and interviews from a wide range of leading UK and European universities.
