Can I Apply to UK Universities Without APs?
The short answer: usually yes — you can apply to many UK universities without APs.
If your US high school doesn’t offer APs, you still have plenty of excellent UK university options.
In fact, a growing number of UK universities now offer potential routes for students whose schools don’t offer APs, the IB or equivalent qualifications. Even many highly ranked UK universities will consider a rigorous school curriculum, advanced or honors classes, GPA and, in some cases, SAT or ACT scores.
But There Are Some Important Exceptions
If you are aiming for Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial or UCL, the situation is different.
These universities generally expect US applicants to present APs, the full IB Diploma, A levels or another recognized standardized or externally assessed qualification or accepted equivalent route. Your school’s own advanced or honors classes alone will not be sufficient.
So, if your school doesn’t offer APs, IB or another recognized equivalent qualification, these universities will not be an option straight from high school, unless you take the required qualifications independently.
Always check each university’s website for its full list of accepted qualifications and the grades or scores required, as requirements vary by university and degree and can change.
For everyone else, the picture is much more encouraging.
More UK Universities Now Recognize Independent US Curricula
Many excellent US high schools have moved away from APs and now offer their own rigorous advanced or honors curricula.
UK universities are becoming increasingly familiar with these schools, and many will now consider strong grades in advanced or honors classes in place of AP exam scores. In these cases, your overall GPA, the rigor of your curriculum and sometimes your SAT or ACT score can become much more important.
This can open the door to some excellent UK universities for students who previously might have assumed they weren’t eligible to apply.
However, admissions policies vary significantly, so be sure to check how each university evaluates your school’s particular curriculum.
Why Don’t UK Universities Just Use My High School Diploma?
The US and UK education systems work very differently.
In the UK, students usually specialize during their final two years of high school and take externally assessed qualifications such as A levels. University offers are then based on achieving specific grades in those qualifications.
A US High School Diploma is much broader and, importantly, there is no single national standard. An A in an advanced class at one US high school may represent something quite different from an A at another.
Historically, this is one reason UK universities have relied heavily on AP exams for US applicants. APs provide an externally standardized qualification that admissions teams can easily understand and compare with UK qualifications.
But things are changing.
Your SAT or ACT May Become More Important
If you don’t have AP or IB results, taking the SAT or ACT can be particularly useful.
A strong GPA in a rigorous curriculum is valuable, but admissions officers may not be familiar with every US high school. An SAT or ACT score provides an additional external academic benchmark.
And you don’t necessarily need the kind of score associated with the most selective US colleges either.
Depending on the university and degree, scores in the 1300s can meet the requirements of some very strong UK universities, while 1400+ will give you more options.
What About Honors and Advanced Classes?
This is where you need to read the small print.
Some UK universities explicitly recognize advanced or honors classes. Others will consider them only if your school doesn’t offer APs. Some require the classes to meet particular criteria, while others assess your school’s curriculum individually.
There can also be subject-specific requirements.
For example, being admitted to study History without APs may be relatively straightforward at a university that recognizes your school’s advanced curriculum. Applying for Engineering, Economics or Computer Science can be more complicated because the university may require evidence that you have studied Mathematics, Physics or another subject to a particular level.
So don’t just check whether a university accepts your overall curriculum. Check the requirements for the specific degree you want to study.
Could I Take AP Exams Even If My School Doesn’t Offer AP Classes?
Yes.
You don’t necessarily have to take an AP class at school in order to sit the corresponding AP exam. For students determined to keep universities such as Oxford or Cambridge open as possibilities, taking AP exams independently can therefore sometimes be worth considering.
However, I wouldn’t recommend independently taking a collection of AP exams simply because you think UK universities require them.
First work out which universities and degrees you’re actually interested in and whether you need APs at all.
You may discover that your existing curriculum already gives you plenty of excellent options.
So, Can I Study in the UK Without APs?
Yes.
Not taking APs may rule out a handful of the most selective universities if you don’t have another accepted equivalent qualification, but it certainly doesn’t rule out studying at an excellent, highly ranked UK university.
If your school has replaced APs with its own rigorous advanced curriculum, look for universities that recognize that type of academic program.
Your application might then be assessed using a combination of:
- Your GPA
- Advanced or honors class grades
- SAT or ACT scores
- Your high school transcript
- Subject-specific preparation
- Your school’s curriculum and academic profile
The biggest mistake is assuming that because your school doesn’t offer APs, you can’t apply to UK universities.
You can.
You just need to build your university list around institutions that recognize the qualifications your school actually offers — and always check the requirements for your intended degree carefully.
